Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), was set up in July 1989 by Act XX (1989) of the Maharashtra State Legislature. The Degree/Diploma of this University is treated as equivalent to the Degree/Diploma of any other university for the purpose of employment in government and semi-government establishments as well as private organizations also. Certificate from YCMOU will also be useful for Higher studies

One of the major goals of the University is to create, preserve and disseminate knowledge to its learners and the masses and thus become a ‘Mass-varsity’. The emphasis, throughout, is on developing educational programmes which qualify a person to get a better job to start earning on his own or help a working person to improve his career. Providing education through classroom-based system is costly, rigid and puts time constraints on the learners.
